2014 United Nations Commemoration Report on: “Victory over Slavery: Haiti and Beyond” at the Harn Museum

The United Nations Educational Scientific & Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Transatlantic Slave Trade (TST) celebrated the United Nations International Day of Remembrance of Slavery with speakers and tour of the Kongo Exhibition at the Harn Museum of Art, March 23, 2014.

At the youth giveaway, Ahyana Napier, an honor elementary student received a copy of Shackled Again? From Slavery to Civil Rights: A Journey Through Race Told Through the Stories of Unsung Heroes by Tony Watkins. Skylar Napier, an honor student at C.H. Price Middle School, Interlochen, FL received a copy of Emancipation Betrayed: The Hidden History of Black Organizing and White Violence in Florida from Reconstruction to the Bloody Election of 1920, signed by UF author and professor, Dr. Paul Ortiz, Samuel Proctor Oral History Program.  Brothers Tyler and Matthew Green received African American calendars.

As one of the guest speakers, Dr. Ortiz talked about the 2014 United Nations theme on Haitian Independence.  Dr. Saundra Morene presented the relationships of West Africans to the American Gullah Geechee Culture.  Elaine Sponholtz shared her research on Anna Kingsley’s antebellum plantation near Jacksonville.  Bertha Lee raised the awareness of slavery today. Performing artists Agnolia Gay and Noni Jones with master drummer “Papa” Nii Sowa-La entertained the audience with African dialogue, dance and song.
