MS Delta Research Trip Applications Due August 1

FreeApply now to be a student researcher on SPOHP’s 6th Annual Mississippi Delta Research Trip!
On September 16, SPOHP will embark on its sixth annual trip to the Mississippi Delta on behalf of the Mississippi Freedom Project. SPOHP will conduct interviews with veterans of the Civil Rights Movement and learn from community organizers working in the Delta. This is a perspective-altering trip for many students each year, and generates numerous successful research projects such as undergraduate theses and service learning projects.
For the past five years, a team of student researchers has traveled with SPOHP to the Mississippi Delta to gather oral histories from veterans of the civil rights movement, contemporary labor leaders, and community organizers. The research team drives from Gainesville to Mississippi, and travels through several counties in the Delta to collect interviews throughout the week. Since 2008, we have partnered with the Sunflower County Freedom Project to collect interviews from over 100 individuals in the Delta.
In addition to this growing archive, SPOHP also sponsors public events in Mississippi and in Gainesville to share these powerful stories with our community. Our sixth year is especially exciting because we are looking forward to carrying out two important partnerships: continuing our work with Teaching for Change in McComb, MS, and initiating conversations about the Mississippi Freedom Summer 50th Anniversary Reunion next summer in Jackson, MS, with the Veterans of the Mississippi Civil Rights Movement, Inc.
