Gainesville, FL—The Samuel Proctor Oral History Program has been selected to receive a competitive Latino Americans: 500 Years of History grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the American Library Association (ALA).
The Oral History Association (OHA), the national professional organization for oral history practitioners, will honor the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program and George A. Smathers Libraries Mississippi Freedom Summer Oral History and Library Curation Project this October with the Elizabeth B. Mason Small Project Award at its annual meeting in Tampa, Florida. The conference will be held October 14-18 at the Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel.

Margaret Stroud Block, long time civil rights activist, passed away June 20 in Cleveland, Mississippi, where she was born and raised. She lectured at universities and organizations throughout the U.S., particularly in the eastern part of the country, on civil rights and current education policies.

The Virginia Foundation for the Humanities sponsored SPOHP’s inaugural Fieldwork in Folklore trip to Virginia to conduct oral histories focusing on landscape changes and the relationship between local culture, memory, and the “built environment” of Matthews County.
The UF History Department highlighted SPOHP’s inaugural Virginia Fieldwork in Folklore research trip, organized by graduate coordinator Jessica Taylor to bring students into the tidewater region and collect oral histories.
