Institute of Hispanic-Latino Cultures Celebrates its 20th anniversary with SPOHP Documentary “Nuestras Historias”

Gainesville, Florida – April 25, 2014 – On April 25th, the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program and the Institute of Hispanic-Latino Cultures “La Casita”, will premiere “Nuestras Historias” a documentary on the origins of the institute and the importance and contributions of Hispanic-Latino students to the University of Florida. Doors will open at 5:00pm, with the screening commencing promptly at 5:30pm in the Pugh Hall Ocora.
Produced by the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program, the documentary represents the culmination of over a years’ worth of interviews with Hispanic-Latino alumni and current students. The film features interviews with Hispanic-Latino alumni and students who were vital to the formation of La Casita, as well as with current students who speak about the centrality of La Casita to current student life and academic success.
“Nuestras Historias” places the creation of Hispanic-Latino Cultures in a broader narrative of the ways that Latinos have help to transform American society. Seeking to create a “home away from home” for Latina/o students, Latino students commenced a two-year struggle culminating in the unveiling of “La Casita” in 1994.
Since then, La Casita has served as a place of guidance, empowerment, affirmation and community to the thousands of Latina/o students that have become a part of the University of Florida. This film is a collaborative research project between the Institute of Hispanic-Latino Cultures and the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program. By listening to the stories of the Latina/o students that have arrived at UF, their struggles, their dreams, their achievements and the impact that they have had on the Gator Nation, we hope to open a discussion where the foundation for the next twenty years of Latino excellence at the University of Florida.
