The Network to Freedom Underground Railroad Oral History Project (URP) gives voice to one of America’s most pivotal and under-documented social movements: the Underground Railroad.
The Underground Railroad conducted people seeking freedom from slavery to safety along a secret network, until at least the end of the Civil War. A partnership between SPOHP and the National Park Service, the URP records the histories, stories, and reflections of descendants and representatives of Underground Railroad freedom seekers and conductors. Watch some of our interviews on our YouTube page.
The Park Service’s Network to Freedom designates more than 700 locations in 39 states, Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The organization serves to honor, preserve, and promote the history of resistance to enslavement through escape and flight. Through this mission, the network helps advance the idea that all people deserve the right to freedom from oppression.
