University Gallery at 50: The Roy Craven Legacy, Gallery Founder and Longest Standing Director

Digital Humanities Coordinator Deborah Hendrix produced an interview documentary on Roy’s Craven’s remarkable legacy for the 50th Anniversary Commemoration, taking place this January.

The Samuel Proctor Oral History Program interviewed Roy Craven in 1992 about his career at the University of Florida for the university-wide oral history collection, currently archived with the interview UF-207 in the University of Florida Digital Collections.

A complete gamut of all cultures, as much as you have in your collections and as much as you can actually book as exhibits. To me, this is what a function of a university museum is. It should have this wide spectrum of activities, and I hope that more of that can take place. And I am sure it will.

University Gallery, located on the University of Florida (UF) campus, will celebrate its 50th anniversary. To commemorate this milestone, University Galleries will be hosting a series of exhibitions throughout the year that celebrate the gallery’s history as well as School of Art + Art History alumni.

In the spring, four exhibitions will honor the legacy of Roy Craven, the gallery’s founding and longest standing director of 25 years. First is “UG at 50: The Roy Craven Legacy,” Dec. 2, 2014 through Feb. 27, 2015 in University Gallery.

The exhibition is free and open to the public via UF Arts.

An opening reception for the “UG at 50: The Roy Craven Legacy Exhibition” was held Friday, Jan. 9, 2015 from 7-9 p.m. SPOHP director Dr. Paul Ortiz and his wife, Sheila Payne, attended the event (picture from Gainesville Magazine).
