Tracing Immigration from the Late Ottoman Empire to the US.

Social network analysis provides methods for visualizing social networks that allow for a deeper understanding of relationships between individuals and groups. This visualization represents the immigration patterns of 456 Greek and Ottoman Greek immigrants who immigrated to the US from the former Ottoman Empire between 1900 – 1924. This data set was collected from the Ellis Island Online Archive. The red/orange circles represent places of origin and the blue/orange circles represent places of destination. The data indicate that the majority of immigrants in this sample recorded New York as their final destination. However, clusters of immigrants continued on to other destinations. Three of these clusters were identified for immigrants from Istanbul, Izmir, and Ordu. The Istanbul and Izmir clusters indicate the same pattern as the majority of immigrants. However, the Ordu cluster shows that the majority of immigrants chose Canton as their final destination.
