Fall 2022 Symposium: Assessing the Ethnic Groups of the Late Ottoman Empire through a Decolonial Lens 1900 -1922

September 10, 2022 @ 9:00 am

The symposium will bring together junior and senior scholars whose research reexamines the political and social events that impacted ethnic groups of the Ottoman Empire through a decolonial lens. Participants will present these events through the vantage point of the ethnic groups within the Ottoman Empire that influenced and impacted their fruition. In this vein, research presentations will focus on the Empire’s Albanians, Armenians, Greeks, Jews, Levantines, Rum, Turks, and their respective diasporas through a decolonial lens will be featured. The symposium aims to marshal decolonial theory to understand how the dynamics between the Ottoman Empire’s ethnic groups can provide insights for contemporary knowledge production.

The Symposium’s organizing committee proudly announces that the keynote will be given by Dr. Fatma Göçek. Dr. Göçek is a Professor of Sociology. Her research focuses on the comparative analysis of history, politics, and gender in the first and third worlds. She critically analyzes the impact of processes such as development, nationalism, religious movements, and collective violence on minorities. She is currently working on a theory book, constructing social theory from the vantage point of minorities.
