Fieldwork Eastern Pennsylvania Day 1

Our first two interviews in Eastern Pennsylvania remind us of the restrictionist nature of US immigration laws. Two migrants, married, both descendants of refugees from Akdak Maden and Ada Pazar in northeastern Turkey, found themselves at the mercy of the US immigration system 6 months after the husband’s arrival. With the third-tier quota for student visas exhausted and deportation looming, the two penned this letter in desperation to avoid deportation. It worked. The husband received a stay of his deportation and a change in visa status.
